I grew up all over Canada thanks to a Canadian military upbringing.
My education: Electronics, wireless communications, project management.
My notable accomplishments: I delivered a successful hydrogen energy project through three strikes and one pandemic.
Why Flow? Flow is very well positioned in a market where I predict stable growth over a long period.
What’s your favourite type of cake? I don’t eat cake! But I do like a good honey-dip doughnut.
What put you on the path to engineering: A thirst to understand more.
My earliest engineering-related memory: Sticking my finger into a light socket to try to understand how it worked.
What I like about systems design: Finding opportunities to eliminate or recover wasted energy.
Projects I’m proud of: DP World Hydrogen RTG Crane, Alexa’s Bus, Mobile Air Monitoring Laboratory
A favourite moment in engineering: It was during commissioning of the RTG Crane, when we realized our system was more efficient than we had modelled, so much so that we smashed fuel efficiency targets by 40%. Our system completely eliminated over half of the energy requirements of operating the crane.
A project that has had an effect on me: Alexa’s Bus. It was just one bus (a roadside drinking and driving counterattack laboratory), but it inspired a groundswell movement that changed laws and turned into a permanent program that has taken thousands of drunk drivers off the roads. This project turned Alexa Middelaer’s tragedy into real change on a large scale.
I chose Vancouver because: Where else can you snowboard in the morning and paddleboard at sunset on the same day?
I’m concerned about: Attacks against science and democracy.
When I’m not working you can find me: In nature or at kids’ extracurriculars (I have five!).
Quote that guides me right now: “That which you are not changing, you are choosing.”
I’m surprisingly good at: Computer programming and software development.
At happy hour I order: Corona Sunbrew.
Coffee or tea: Coffee.
